Screwworm Information

Two Lambs and a bucket on it's side Screwworms are fly larvae (maggots) that feed on living flesh. These parasites can infect any warm-blooded animal. Screwworms enter wounds as small as an insect bite and feed on living tissue in the area. If untreated, screwworm infestations can be fatal. In the US, Screwworm is a Foreign Animal Disease reportable within 24 hours of diagnosis.


Screwworm Alert- September 25, 2007

Mississippi: A 16 year old dog, born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, imported into the United States through Miami Airport on September 13, 2007, was diagnosed with New World Screwworm on September 20,2007. The dog has been treated and remains under quarantine. The dog's living area, transport vehicle and carrier have been thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and treated with a pesticide. USDA is conducting an epidemiologic investigation.
